How We Research
Every guide on Get Security Camera starts with one question: will this product fit the home and the way you want to monitor it? For a camera system, that means where you need coverage, how it connects, what records the video and how you will review it.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the home and the setup
A Wi-Fi camera may not suit a spot with a weak signal. A wired system may be a poor fit if you cannot run cable where the cameras need to go.
We consider coverage, installation, power, network access and the space available for a recorder. For locks, alarms and lights, we also consider the door, entry point or area they are meant to protect.
2. We compare specs and features
We look at the details makers list: resolution, field of view, night vision, motion detection, weather rating, power options, storage capacity and recorder channel count. We also check whether cameras, recorders, apps and network equipment are described as compatible.
Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note subscription needs, warranty terms and what comes in the box when that information is available.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read what buyers report after setting up and using a product. We look for patterns, like unreliable connections, difficult installation, missed motion alerts, poor night images or recorder compatibility problems.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A camera suited to a small entryway may score lower in a guide for a large property, and a recorder is judged on the systems it can support.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name, compatibility details and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
Security products can differ by home, network and installation. Check the maker's instructions and compatibility details before buying.
